I'm curious. What does the TM Forum think of the concepts of Self Organizing Networks (SON) as advanced by NGMN, 3GPP, etc.?

Our response:

SON (self organizing network) is for 4G networks. It includes at least self configuration, self optimization and self healing. All of these three can be benefit a great deal from Frameworx based Operational Support Systems.

Self configuration will need the support of advanced CM (configuration management) with the help of FM  (fault management) and PM (performance management). Automatic (self) configuration will be done by advanced CM but triggered by customer needs (i.e.: a customer order, SLA etc), fault, TCA (threshold crossing alarm from PM) etc.

Self optimization will need very accurate inventory and real-time performance management. The PM system will feed data to the self optimization system in real-time which then will apply an optimization algorithm. This process will most likely involve the self configuration system to adjust settings to achieve optimal results.

Self healing again will use an automatic reconfiguration system to adjust network settings when a problem is detected.

AS CM, PM, FM, SLA management etc are all the focus of the TMF. Standardization will be critical to build SON because CM, PM, FM, SLA management functions are all needed to be working together. In other words, end-to-end horizontal, vertical management functions, and business processes within the  eTOM of the TMF define OSS solutions which will be required to achieve SON.

Thank you Daniel for your question!
